Equipment Checklist - Pre-School
We want our youngest skaters to have a positive first experience on the ice. Having the right gear makes all the difference!
1. Mandatory Helmet & Face Shield
Because our Pre-Schoolers are just learning their balance, we have a specific safety requirement:
- Requirement: CSA-approved hockey helmets equipped with a full face shield or cage are mandatory.
- Standards: The helmet must bear the CSA approval sticker and fit snugly, covering the forehead entirely.
- Why the Cage? The full face shield provides essential protection for early beginners as they navigate their first strides.
2. Choosing the Right Skates
- Recommended: Hockey skates are highly recommended for beginners. They help children learn to push to the side to stride, rather than relying on a toe pick for stability.
- Figure Skates: These are also welcome if your child prefers them.
- Prohibited: No "Bob Skates" (the kind that strap onto regular boots). These do not provide the support needed to actually learn to skate.
3. Warm & Dry Clothing
Pre-Schoolers spend a fair amount of time on the ice (and sometimes sitting on it!), so staying dry is key.
- Layers over Bulk: While snowsuits are allowed, they can be very bulky and make it hard for kids to move or get back up. We suggest layers topped with a lightweight waterproof shell or splash pants.
- Gloves: Waterproof gloves or mitts are strongly recommended. Wet, cold hands are the fastest way to end a fun practice!
