CCA Figure Skating Club Programs

At CCA, we pride ourselves on being a non-competitive, "fun-first" club. To ensure every skater has the best experience and remains safe on the ice, it is essential that parents review the prerequisite skills for each level before registering. Skaters who do not meet the minimum skill requirements may be moved to a different class at the discretion of the coaching team.

We only offer group lessons, so skaters who require one-on-one attention or specialized support may find that our programming is not the right fit. In our group lesson environment, skaters must be able to navigate the ice alongside their peers, learning to share the space safely while treating every participant and coach with respect. All skaters must abide by our Safety Policy at all times.

CCA Figure Skating Club Program Pathway

πŸ›‘ Step 1: The Foundations

Pre-School Program

  • Best For: Our youngest skaters taking their very first glides on the ice.
  • Ages: 3 to 5 years old.
  • The Focus: Learning fundamental balance, how to get up safely after a fall, and basic forward movement through games, upbeat music, and a heavy focus on fun.

Learn to Skate

  • Best For: Beginners or skaters looking to build a rock-solid general foundation for any ice sport.
  • Ages: 5+ years old.
  • The Focus: Moving through our structured Badge Level Progression system. Skaters develop essential stability, posture, edge control, and stopping ability, transitioning shaky glides into confident strides alongside their peers.

πŸ”€ Step 2: Choose Your Pathway

Once a skater completes their initial foundations (Learn to Skate Level 3, City of Calgary Skating 3, or equivalent), they can choose to branch off into specialized recreational tracks.

πŸ“ Pathway A: Figure Skating (Artistry & Technique)

  1. Learn to Figure Skate (Intro to Figure Skating)
    • Best For: Skaters transitioning from general lessons to the specialized world of figure skating.
    • Key Prerequisites: Completion of Level 3 or equivalent skills. Forwards crossovers, demonstrated one-foot balance/stability, and strong stopping.
    • The Focus: Introduction to figure-specific techniques, including edge work, foundational jumps, basic spins, posture, and flexibility.
  2. Figure Skating (Advanced Recreational Excellence)
    • Best For: Experienced recreational skaters who love the technical and artistic challenge of the sport without the high pressure of competitions.
    • Key Prerequisites: Completion of Level 7or equivalent skills. Advancement to this program is by invite only.
    • The Focus: Refining advanced rotational jumps, multi-revolution spins, intricate footwork, field movements (spirals/drags), and musical performance.

πŸ“ Pathway B: Hockey & Power Skating (Speed & Agility)

  1. Hockey Buddies
    • Best For: Young athletes looking to find their "hockey legs" and build a safe foundation before jumping into organized gameplay.
    • Ages: 4 to 5 years old.
    • The Focus: Mastering the "hockey stance," recovery from falls in full gear, and developing an efficient stride using their edges to push and glide with confidence.
  2. Power Skating
    • Best For: Skaters looking to dramatically improve their speed, explosiveness, and control for hockey, ringette, or advanced recreation.
    • Ages: 7+ years old.
    • The Focus: An action-packed, high-energy environment focusing entirely on skating mechanics: powerful stride development, deep edge awareness, quick starts, controlled hockey stops, and agile directional changes.

🌟 Step 3: Giving Back & Giving Forward

Junior Coaching Program (Youth Instructional Leadership)

  • Best For: Advanced skaters looking to transition from students to passionate club role models.
  • The Progression: All leaders enter as a Junior Coach Assistant to accumulate 15 training hours and learn group management, before getting the opportunity to advance to a Junior Coach Lead role where they help direct ice lanes and mentor our youngest Pre-School and Learn to Skate families.
